Description of Ilsham Cottage

Set on the English Riviera, this quintessential English cottage nestles in Torquay’s exclusive Wellswood village. Situated in an AONB and a SSSI, it lies a virtual stone’s throw from the renowned Kent’s Caverns, one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe and Ice Age home of Britain’s earliest humans. Follow in the footsteps of England’s finest men and women - Agatha Christie, I.K. Brunel and Charles Darwin to name but a few - who took inspiration from the area, which is now a gateway site to the world’s first urban global geopark and just a few minutes’ walk to the Marine Conservation Recommended and Blue Flag beaches at Anstey’s Cove and Meadfoot, with stunning woodland and magnificent coastal paths along South Devon’s beautiful bay. Built using the local limestone, this 150-year-old cottage was once part of Lord Haldon’s estate and still retains much of its Victorian charm and character after being lovingly restored. Arranged over three levels, it has Victorian maple and pine floors, and cast-iron radiators throughout, complemented by an eclectic mix of quality furniture, soft furnishings and antiques, and has a 42in plasma TV in the living room. It is set in a very pretty, magical garden with abundant plant and bird life. A summer/play house and barbecue areas are provided. The village itself has a cosmopolitan feel, with a range of eateries to tempt every palate, a patisserie, a delicatessen, a convenience store plus an excellent choice of small shops. There are also beauty salons, an upmarket cocktail lounge, traditional English pub, a children’s play area on the green and, of course, the hotel featured in Fawlty Towers. The English Riviera has many attractions and several NT/English Heritage properties are easily accessible. Dartmouth, Totnes, Dartmoor National Park and Exeter are within easy reach. Beach/sea fishing, 600 yards, Torquay harbour/town and Babbacombe/Downs, 1 mile. Shops and pub 100 yards.

Living room with Minster stone fireplace. Dining room with enamel wood-burning stove and French doors to garden. Compact, well-equipped kitchen with granite and marble worktops, and exposed stone wall. Original conservatory with sitting area. First floor: Double bedroom with built-in wardrobes and wash basin.
