In the small village of High Lorton, it is only 4 miles from Cockermouth and 8 miles over Whinlatter Pass to Keswick. There is a visitor centre at Whinlatter with numerous walks through the forest and spectacular views of the Lake District.
It is ideally situated to explore the quiet western area of the National Park as well as being accessible to the busier and more frequented central Lakeland. Local amenities include fishing, golf, horse riding and tennis. The pretty market town of Keswick offers a wide range of attractions for visitors, from shops and museums, boating trips around Derwentwater and countryside rambles to climbing and fell walking. Few areas can offer a better variety of walking and climbing opportunities.
