Perthshire covers around 2000 square miles and sits at the very heart of Scotland. Just over one hour’s drive or train ride from the great cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, Perthshire is a fabulous location for your cheap cottage holiday. Rich in heritage and culture with an outstanding range of outdoor sports, family fun, championship golf courses, miles of walks, cycle tracks, horse riding and simply stunning scenery all waiting to be enjoyed.
With a history that stretches back literally thousands of years, the inspiration of poets and artists, Perthshire is a land of ancient Celtic tribes, dotted with Roman army camps, home to kings and queens and their fine castles, tranquil abbeys and scenes of infamous rebellions and great battles.
The natural wonders of Perthshire are rolled out in lochs, rivers, moorland and wonderful woodland where you may, if you’re lucky, come across rare animals like the pine marten and capercaillie. There are hundreds of miles of way marked woodland paths to enjoy and lots of activities to keep even the smallest hands busy. Up in the hills spot red deer and the soaring golden eagle, rare wild flowers and red grouse.
Base yourself in pretty Pitlochry for great walks and year round events. Fishermen will be completely spoilt for choice with the mighty River Tay close by and an abundance of lochs to choose from. Golfers too have plenty of choice as Perthshire is home to some of the world’s top courses including Gleneagles. Neighbouring Fife is home to St Andrews, another superb base for your holiday and another world famous golf course next to Scotland’s picturesque easterly shores.
Castles, fine houses, gardens, Roman remains, military past and royal homes abound in Perthshire. Make a beeline for the award winning Crannog Centre at Kenmore where you can explore an Iron Age loch dwelling. On Loch Tay there are no less than 18 2000-year-old manmade islands (or crannogs) thought to have been built to support homes and protect the inhabitants from wild roaming loch side wolfs and wildcats.
The island castle in the Nature Reserve of Loch Leven housed Mary, Queen of Scots before she made a daring escape; there’s the beautiful Glamis Castle, childhood home of the Queen Mother and military history at the Black Watch Museum – a very small sample of the goodies on offer.
If you like to fish head for the mighty River Tay that winds through the region, home to salmon, otter and lamprey. Golfers flock to this Perthshire to enjoy the wonderful courses and facilities, there’s an amazing array of outdoor sports to enjoy including horse riding, rafting, sailing, cycling, canoeing, gorge climbing, mountain biking, gliding, sphereing (that’s the one where you bounce down a hill inside a giant ball), quad biking and abseiling…
Families love this area for the sheer diversity of events, attractions and nature on tap.
