Holiday Cottages in Arran

Arran

The most southerly of the Scottish Isles, often called ‘Scotland in miniature’, you’ll find Arran in the glittering Firth of Clyde just off the coast of Ayrshire and a superb ‘get away from it all’ destination for your perfect Scottish cottage holiday.  At only 19 miles long and 10 miles wide, the little island’s first inhabitants were Neolithic farmers (between 4,500BC and 2,000BC).  These ancients left their footprint on the land in the traces of their field systems, stone circles, standing stones and cairns, and today, a proud rural tradition and many legends still mingle with the breathtaking landscape.

Home to wild red deer, otters, red squirrels and abundant wild flowers, be it walking, cycling, wildlife, bird watching or full on adrenaline fuelled fun; from its towering peaks of the interior to charming villages, rolling hills, woodland and rugged coastline, you’ll find there is truly something for everyone on Arran.

Things to do in Arran

If you really want to see Arran, pull on your boots and start walking.  Check out the coastal way for lovely low level walks and venture further up into the hills and peaks for more adventurous climbs.  If you enjoy bird watching join the Kilmory Wildlife Viewing Project to see the Arran Hen Harriers, and get on your bike to discover gorgeous scenery and fantastic mountain biking terrain.

Walk along the coast to the King’s Cave where Robert the Bruce famously met that industrious spider, “If at first you don’t succeed…”  A deeply spiritual place, explore Arran’s ancient past on Machrie Moor with its six stone circles.  Let off steam at Brodick Castle and Country Park and throughout the island sample all the bags of outdoor thrills and fun for all ages and abilities on offer, including archery, canoeing and gorge climbing.  Golfers can choose from seven different courses and we haven’t started on the festivals, annual Highland Games and distilleries yet…
