Hawes is a thriving market town at the head of Wensleydale in the heart of the gorgeous Yorkshire Dales. Complete with a cobbled main street, traditional stone buildings and fells to north and south, Hawes has a natural beauty and real picture postcard appeal. Yorkshire’s highest market town, the Pennine Way (the UK’s first national walking trail) runs through Hawes making it hugely popular with walkers. Hawes is also a working town with farming, cheese and rope making still a big part of community life.
With antique shops and craft workshops, a wide choice of restaurants and attractions, a holiday cottage in Hawes is a great base in the Yorkshire Dales giving you access to some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. Meadows and moors, waterfalls and woodland – all here for you to enjoy and explore.
The Dales Countryside Museum, incorporating the National Park Centre is housed in the charming old railway station and has many interactive and hands-on exhibits. Make a beeline to the Wensleydale Creamery and find out how they make the delicious favourite cheese of Wallace and Gromit. Walking is certainly one of the biggest activities in the Dales and there are many shops full of all the gear and countless walks around Wensleydale, the neighbouring valley of Swaledale and the Pennine Way right on your doorstep.
Elsewhere, Hadraw Force, the largest single drop waterfall in England is a spectacular sight and all the family will love a day out at Forbidden Corner, a fairytale park of labyrinths, tunnels, chambers and follies. Visit too the Wensleydale railway in the nearby pretty market town of Leyburn.
