Quite possibly one of the sunniest island locations, you’ll find Ventnor on the south facing coast of the Isle of Wight. With its distinctly Mediterranean feel, the town blossomed in Victorian times becoming famous as a health resort when physician Sir James Clarke discovered that the warm microclimate was an ideal place to treat tuberculosis. The large Royal National Hospital is now gone and replaced by the beautiful Ventnor Botanic Gardens where you’ll find rare and exotic plants thriving in the sub tropical sunshine.
Within reach of all the Island’s attractions, the charming zigzag roads leading down to the seafront, the excellent beach sheltered by the cliffs and terraces, souvenirs, antiques and friendly restaurants in impressive Victorian buildings all go to make Ventnor a super spot for your Isle of Wight cottage holiday.
Ventnor’s sun trapped, top quality beach is a big draw to this seaside town, but don’t forget the Botanic Gardens with its 22 acres of shrubs and subtropical plants. Just down the road the cliff top theme park Blackgang Chine has exciting rides for all the family and in the nearby pretty village of Godshill you’ll find a Model Village with award wining gardens, as well as the Shell Museum (Natural History Centre) set in a 17th century squires cottage.
The sheer number of footpaths and scenic routes on the Isle of Wight make walking and cycling a relaxing and fun way to explore the island and enjoy all the flora and fauna. Make sure you visit Shanklin with its famous Chine and head to the west side of the island and join a boat trip to see the impressive Needles rock formation.
