
Derbyshire’s country town, Matlock is a spa town on the bend of the river Derwent. Until the Victorian period it was little visited but once discovered quickly became a select spa for the wealthy – a sort of land-locked seaside resort complete with cliffs! Expanding to include Matlock Bath with its arcades and gift shops, Matlock is overlooked by Riber Castle, a romantic folly from the 1860s.

As well as the Peak District National Park on your doorstep there are many fascinating and historic attractions nearby from caves and caverns to cable car rides, theme parks, museums, superb walking, climbing, plus fishing and canoeing on the Derwent.

Get some help from local climbing centres and also visit Black Rocks Country Park. Join the local walking festival in April/May and get on your bike for some truly awesome scenic routes – hire your bike from Middle Top Visitors Centre, Wirksworth – and Golfers head for Matlock Golf Club.
Explore the underwater world at Matlock Bath Aquarium, cable car rides and caverns at the Heights of Abraham and Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park for the little ones and steam train ride on Peak Rail. Heritage lovers head for the Peak District Mining Museum and Richard Arkwright’s Cromford Mill.
