Buxton

The spa town of Buxton has been a popular holiday resort for centuries and, with its famous Arts Festival and Opera House, is now considered to be the cultural capital of the Peak District.  The Romans first recognised the importance of the town establishing at least three bath houses here and later, in Victorian times, visitors flocked in to, “take the waters”.

With its ornamental gardens, awe inspiring architecture, splendid shopping and natural thermal springs, there is plenty to do in Buxton even before you step out into the 1,438 sq km of the Peak District National Park that offers breathtaking summits, windswept moors and deep valleys for both a fantastic day out with the family or a challenge to the most experienced climber.

Things to Do in Buxton

With over 450 performances a year Buxton Opera House is a thriving theatre and sits at the heart of Buxton Festival, which takes place in July every year.  The Pavilion Gardens provides 23 acres of recently restored Victorian gardens and you can learn all about the geology, history and architecture of the Peak District at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery.

Take advantage of miles of cycle tracks, climbing, walking and caving.  Hire your bikes from Parsley Hay Centre, visit Poole’s Cavern a two million year old natural limestone cave or the Blue John Mines for an unforgettable underground experience.  Enjoy the Otter, Owl and Wildlife Park for a fun family day out or, for those who just want a ‘yomp’ round the moors, download an audio trail from Moors to the Future and ensure you don’t get lost!  Don’t forget you’re also in easy driving distance of fabulous Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and of course Alton Towers!
