
Our Bronze Age ancestors settled here around the warm thermal springs, also mentioned in the Domesday Book, today Bakewell is a bustling Peak District market town and great place for your self catering cottage holiday. Famous for its five arch medieval bridge, one of the oldest in the country, sample the famous Bakewell Tart, or Pudding as it’s more properly known. There’s well dressing, carnivals and the famous Bakewell Show in August, a great county show and major agricultural event in the area. From Bakewell you can explore all the Peak District’s natural wonders and other heritage towns including Buxton, Matlock and Ashbourne.
Get along to the Bakewell Visitor Centre for the local lowdown. Walkers can strike off along the lovely river Wye and, one of the most scenic places in the Peaks, Monsal Dale is close at hand. Superb for walking, cycling, nearby fishing, climbing and riding in this stunning National Park. If you enjoy golf check out the local Bakewell club with its great scenic views and learn about the history of Bakewell at the Old House Museum. There’s local bike hire available and great local food from the popular farmers’ market every last Saturday of the month.
Within easy reach you’ll find some of the UK’s finest heritage including Haddon Hall a 12th century fortified manor house and, of course, the incomparable Chatsworth House. Home to the Dukes of Devonshire, gardens by Capability Brown and Joseph Paxton with a 290ft jet fountain, it’s a wonderful day out including farmyard, garden centre, farm shop and restaurant, plus, under an hour’s drive away Alton Towers, the UK’s top theme park!
