Holiday Cottages in Shropshire

Welcome to the Shropshire

If you’re looking for beautiful scenery, tranquillity, a mild climate, good food, great heritage and outdoor enjoyment welcome to Shropshire – a lovely spot for your fantastic self catering cottage holiday.  Snuggling up to mid Wales with Herefordshire to the south, Cheshire to the north and only an hour’s drive from Birmingham to the west, Shropshire’s mellow rolling meadows, trim hedges and charming market towns all seem to enjoy a slower pace of life.

Shropshire has had its fair share of turbulent history with Roman invaders, Welsh invasions and Norman rule, plus a country that boasts the ‘real’ King Arthur, to be the birth place of the modern Olympics and the Industrial Revolution actually makes Shropshire deceptively quiet!  If you like food, you’ll love Ludlow.  Hailed by Country Life as, “… the most vibrant small town in the country.” Ludlow is reputed to have more Michellin Starred restaurants than any other town in England; it also enjoys superb markets, fairs and the annual food and drink festival.  The riverside market town of Shrewsbury (if you were a Saxon you’d know it as Scrobbesbyrig) too is a great favourite with its half timbered houses and winding streets all caught within a loop of the glittering River Severn, it’s also the birth place of the great naturalist Charles Darwin.

A county of really diverse scenery including canals, rivers, wooded valleys, orchards and vineyards – superb for walking, boating, cycling, riding and many, many more attractions and activities that will keep even the most demanding of little minds happy and busy – come to Shropshire, it’s great!

Things to do in the Shropshire

If you love heritage, you’ll love Shropshire.  Enjoy Ludlow’s epic castle and venue for the annual Arts Festival; Chirk Castle with its magnificent views across the Marches and stunning Stokesay Castle.  Dating from 1281 this 13th century fortified manor house is the best preserved and finest you’ll find in England.  For more recent history the whole family will enjoy a visit to The Ironbridge Gorge Museums.  A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s first iron bridge, explore the nine award winning museums within this extraordinary site. There’s also Britain’s fourth largest Roman city, Wroxeter or Viroconium, where you can also follow the trail of King Arthur.

Animals and events galore will entertain the whole family at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom, plus the fascinating Acton Scott Historic Working Farm and owls at Rays Farm.  Foodies chow down at Ludlow’s annual Food and Drink Festival and if you like your ale real, visit Three Tuns at Bishops Castle, brewing since 1642 and now with their own brewing museum.

For outdoor activities enjoy the wonderful scenery from the saddle of your horse or bike.  Walkers will enjoy miles of way marked paths or why not take to the skies with a birds’ eye view from a balloon or glider? There’s plenty of watersports on the River Severn, including canoeing and if you like sporting achievements check out the birthplace of the modern Olympics at Much Wenlock – we kid you not!
