A small, vibrant market town bordering the gorgeous Forest of Dean and River Wye, Ross-on-Wye claims to be the birth place of tourism when, in 1745, John Edgerton began scenic boat trips bringing in visitors. Today Ross is just as much of a draw with its attractive winding streets dotted with Tudor houses and offering easy access to the Forest of Dean, picturesque Symonds Yat and the of course the superb Wye Valley – a perfect spot for your cottage holiday.
Everyone can join in with a canoe trip down the River Wye. Medieval and majestic Goodrich Castle is close by and you can enjoy watching Peregrine Falcons and the dramatic views at Symonds Yat Rock (in season the RSPB set up telescopes). Elsewhere the Sculpture Walk is a lovely way to explore the forest and nearby Puzzlewood, favourite of writer Tolkein, is a wonderland for kids… Middle Earth anyone?
