The picturesque village of Bamburgh on the Northumbrian coast is dominated by its romantic and majestic sandstone castle sitting on top of its steep basalt crag. With great views looking out over seemingly endless sand dunes to the distant Farne Islands, originally an ancient tribal stronghold the name Bamburgh is believed to originate from the first King of Northumbria, Aethelfrid, who called the fort (or burgh) after his wife Bebba – over time Bebba’s Burgh became Bamburgh.
The great castle was restored by Victorian industrialist, Lord Armstrong. The village churchyard is also the last resting place of Grace Darling and a museum about her daring deeds lies opposite. A holiday cottage in Bamburgh puts you at the heart of miles of unspoilt coastal countryside with lots of surrounding activities and attractions for all the family – perfect!
