Alnwick

Picturesque and surrounded by unspoilt countryside, Alnwick (pronounced Annick) is possibly one of Northumberland’s loveliest towns dominated by the awe inspiring seat of the Duke’s of Northumberland, Alnwick Castle, and nestling on the sloping banks of the River Aln.

With the magnificent castle so dominant this little town is sometimes known as the ‘Windsor of the North’, and was an important staging post on the Great North Road with travellers and horses taking their rest at the Old Cross Inn and White Swan.  Textiles and leather were town trades, plus rope making and fishing tackle works that still survive today.  The castle itself is a huge draw for visitors, appearing in Harry Potter and Elizabeth, together with its award-winning gardens, but Alnwick also offers a superb base for a cottage holiday within easy reach of Northumberland’s beautiful unspoilt coast, wildlife and heritage.
