The North Yorkshire Moors National Park is a wonderful place to kick back and relax or set off on some great outdoor activities; offering beautiful scenery and natural wonders, world class heritage and plenty of adrenaline fuelled fun for all the family.

“Everywhere peace, everywhere serenity and a marvelous freedom from the tumult of the world…”  This is as true today as when Aelred, Abbot of Rievaulx Abbey, reputedly spoke these words back in the 12th century.  A superb choice for a self catering holiday, with our cheap cottage holidays you can take advantage of everything this much loved region has to offer.  From heather clad moorland to ancient woodland, green dales, dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches.

Base yourself in the picturesque market town of Helmsley or charming Pickering, both offering fantastic walking, heritage and fun right on your doorstep.  Walkers and cyclists love this region for its sense of freedom and broad horizons and, if you don’t want to use the car, the special Moorsbus runs regular services throughout the warmer months allowing walkers and site-seers easy access to the Moors and the 1,400 miles of way marked paths.

Great houses, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, quad biking, superb museums, great grub and forest fun; choose from our range of warm and welcoming holiday cottages in the North Yorkshire Moors and enjoy great value holidays throughout the year!

Things to do on the North Yorkshire Moors

Walkers, cyclists and riders love this region, the town of Pickering, to the south of the park, is working towards being recognised as a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town by putting place all the amenities to make it easy for people to pull on the boots and set off for a great day’s adventure.  Leave the car behind and take advantage of the Moorsbus in the summer months or hop aboard the North York Moors Railway.  This nostalgic steam railway will take you on the route filmed for Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express, through enchanting scenery to Goathland, TV’s Heartbeat country and as far as the historic port of Whitby from where Captain Cook set sail on Endeavour.

Watersports are well catered for from canoeing to off-shore sailing and if you like caving, abseiling, gorge walking and orienteering there are many activity centres with courses for beginners right up to more expert outward bounders!  Events and festivals are held throughout the calendar; check out the knights at medieval Helmsley Castle, the tranquil beauty of Rievaulx Abbey once one of England’s richest monasteries, and elegant Duncombe Park.

For fabulous family fun Go Ape! in Dalby Forest also a paradise for wildlife, bird watching, walkers and cyclists with plenty of activities for little hands including hunts, events and exhibitions throughout the year.  If you like thrilling rides you’re also within easy reach of Flamingo Land found just to the south of Pickering.
