In the heart of East Anglia, the vibrant and historic city of Norwich is packed with art and culture, markets, malls and loads of lively events and festivals throughout the year. In the 11th century Norwich was the second largest city in England drawing its wealth from the thriving wool trade throughout the Middle Ages. This wealth financed the building of many fine churches and, believe it or not, Norwich has more medieval churches than almost any other city in Europe.
Reputedly in the top five places in the UK to shop, Norwich boasts delightful speciality shops throughout its winding medieval streets, modern precincts and the largest open air market in the country. Together with its fascinating heritage and the beautiful Norfolk Broads on its doorstep, a holiday cottage in Norwich can truly offer something for everyone.
Norwich Cathedral, a great focal point of the city, is certainly worth a visit, as is the fine 12th century Norman Castle which houses a museum and art gallery – just one of the many great museums in the city. Some of Norwich’s medieval churches you’ll find put to a more modern use including the Norwich Arts Centre, the Norwich Puppet Theatre and the wonderful Inspire Discovery Centre – an exciting hands-on science museum. Meanwhile, the magnificent collection at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is a must for art lovers.
Plantation Garden is a peaceful Victorian garden near the city centre and, for a fun family day out check out the Dinosaur Adventure Park only a few miles out of town. There’s great walking in the surrounding countryside including Boudica’s Way (from Norwich to Diss) and the Norfolk Broads offers spectacular scenery whether you decide to explore on foot, by bicycle or by boat.
