Hampshire styles itself as England’s ‘culture capital of the South East’ and they’ve got a point.  The county of Austen and historic Winchester; maritime heritage of Portsmouth, plus award-winning food, museums, forest, rolling vales and picturesque towns all offer the opportunity for fantastic days out.  Enjoy great walking, cycling and myriad attractions and activities inland and watersports along the bay strewn coastline.

If you’d like to get closer to nature then there’s no better place than the diverse habitats and abundant wildlife in the New Forest.  Including open heath and woodland, the broad leafy canopy shelters a living forest where cattle, wild ponies and deer freely browse and graze; come across them in a sunlit glade and you’ll be looking at a way of life that hasn’t changed for centuries.  William the Conqueror named the area in 1079, ‘New Hunting Forest’ or ‘Nova Foresta’ and you’ll find it pretty much unchanged some 1000 years on.  The New Forest today offers a paradise for walkers, cyclists, riders and nature lovers.  Host to events throughout the year, museums and evidence of earlier Roman visitors; enjoy losing yourself in this leafy wonderland, all within easy reach of your New Forest and Hampshire holiday cottage.

Things to do in the New Forest and Hampshire

There is always something going on in Hampshire!  For all year round fun and family entertainment this county of festivals and events offers bags to do and see.  Beach lovers head for Calshot – a shingle beach with panoramic views out towards the Solent and Isle of Wight with Calshot Activity Centre on hand for climbing and watersports.  Visit Eastney, another lovely clean shingle beach, great for fishing and windsurfing, plus the hugely popular Hayling Island beaches offering shingle and sand at low tide: venue for national windsurfing competitions, beach volley ball, children’s play area and watersports.

For heritage head for historic Winchester its great Cathedral, The Great Hall and King Arthur’s Round Table and Wolvesey Castle, plus the largest collection of military museums outside London including the Royal Hampshire Regiment Museum and the Royal Armouries Fort Nelson, close to nearby Fareham.

If you’re a fan of Pride and Prejudice author Jane Austen, visit her 17^th century home where she wrote and spent the final eight years of her life at the Jane Austen’s House Museum, Chawton.  Marvel too at Portsmouth’s historic Dockyards, home of the Royal Navy and impressive Porchester Castle.
