Stamford was one of the 10 biggest towns in medieval England and the many surviving buildings and beautiful Georgian stone houses make it a popular film location with scenes from Pride and Prejudice, Middlemarch and The Da Vinci Code all filmed here. The magnificent Burghley Estate sits just outside the town and Stamford’s excellent independent shops, and good eateries all go to make this a great spot for your cottage holiday in Lincolnshire.
Home to the famous Horse Trials, and one of England’s finest stately homes, the outstanding Burghley House is within walking distance of Stamford and offers a great day out. Guided historical walks, tranquil river paths and the nearby ‘Jurassic Way’ make Stamford a favourite with walkers and there are many ancient buildings to explore including the medieval Browne’s Hospital. Out of town, there are exhilarating watersports at Tallington Lakes and family fun at Sacrewell Farm just a few miles down the road.
