The big skies, rolling wolds, broad vales, fens and charming coastline of Lincolnshire are a wonderful and often overlooked cottage holiday destination. Vibrant rural communities of market towns, fishing ports, great estates, ancient heritage and sleepy villages abound here, threaded through with arrow straight Roman roads and winding country lanes.
After subduing local tribes, the Romans held sway in Lincolnshire and the improvements they sought to make are still very much in evidence today, including the inland port of Brayford Pool in Lincoln itself. County town Lincoln was a watering hole for retired Roman soldiers, William the Conqueror built a castle here and the towering cathedral was completed in 1311. Visit the historic market town of Stamford, part of the great Burghley Estate, with its beautiful provincial English architecture.
During the Second World War Lincolnshire’s flat topped ridge played a key role in Bomber Command hosting many RAF squadrons including the Lancaster bombers of 617 Dambusters fame based at RAF Scampton. Many of the wartime airfields, their towers and runways silent and abandoned, are crumbling back into the land but still serve as a haunting reminder for us today.
