To the North of Liverpool and just across the border from Lancashire you’ll find England’s golf coast and the charming Victorian seaside resort of Southport.
Offering fabulous beaches and surrounded by no less than seven championship golf courses (including Royal Birkdale), Southport has charming parks, gardens and tree lined boulevards; great shopping, promenades, al fresco café snacking, great pubs and fine dining.
Families love Southport’s seaside fun with miles of golden sands, fairground rides, Britain’s oldest pier and largest man-made leisure lake where you’ll find plenty of watersports and activities. Southport is also well known for its huge array of annual festivals including the famous Southport Air Show in September, Flower Show, Jazz Festival and Musical Fireworks Championships! If you love nature and wildlife you won’t be far from some unique habitats including Formby Point with its pine forests, dunes and rare red squirrels.
Marine Lake is one of the largest man-made leisure lakes in England, a great place to enjoy learning to sail, row and water-ski. You can also hop aboard the Southport Belle, a paddle steamer that offers scenic tours of the seafront! Everyone will enjoy the beautiful beach, plus kids will love New Pleasureland, Splash World and Model Railway Village. Heritage lovers head for Atkinson Gallery, Botanic Gardens Museum and Little Theatre for exhibitions and events throughout the year.
Further afield, golfers will be spoilt for choice with a huge range of superb golf courses to choose from. For a fun family day out enjoy Camelot Theme Park near Chorley and great Knowsley Estate Safari Park. Nature lovers head for Formby Point to enjoy the dunes, pine woods and spot the 5,000-year-old deer footprints and elusive red squirrels. And, of course, just to the south the mighty city of Liverpool is well worth a day out exploring the docks, River Mersey, great shopping, culture and events.
