Until the arrival of the railway in 1857, Windermere town was three small hamlets, subsequently renamed after the great lake itself, which is just under a mile away. Not to be confused with nearby Bowness on Windermere, Windermere is a great base for a holiday cottage. Attracting a little less bustle than Bowness; easily accessible with beautiful Victorian houses, awe inspiring scenery on your doorstep and of course, Lake Windermere, the largest natural lake in England just down the road.
Lace up your boots and enjoy the fantastic choice of walks in the area and, slightly more relaxing, take ‘em off again for messing about boating on the lake. For another slice of scenery all abilities are welcomed for a spot of pony trekking or take in superb 360º views from a balloon ride. Windermere Golf Club offers a friendly welcome to visitors and there’s a wonderful day out to be had at Muncaster Castle and Owl Centre. More family fun is found at the Aquarium of the Lakes, nearby Steam Railway and magical Beatrix Potter World.
