Perched at the top of Derwentwater in the heart of the Lake District you’ll find the bustling and picturesque market town of Keswick, attracting walkers, shoppers and those in search of a good pub lunch. Lakeside, there are boats to be hired and it’s worth getting out on the water to view the stunning scenery.
Discover the pretty market place in the heart of the town and a good range of shops, many specialising in outdoor gear. With a history going back hundreds of years, Keswick owes some of its prosperity to the discovery of ‘black lead’ or graphite, which made it the centre of the pencil making industry. Later the presence of poets and writers including Wordsworth increased its popularity and today Keswick is an ideal base for exploring all the Lake District has to offer.
As well as the excellent shopping and trips on the Lake, book a seat at the Theatre by the Lake. Open all year round and offering a varied program in its stunning location, it’s a great night out for everyone. For walkers, cyclists and climbers Keswick pushes all the right buttons with the highest mountains in England: Skiddaw, Scafell Pike and Helvellyn all within easy reach.
For time out from the walking boots head for the fascinating Keswick Mining Museum that charts the history of the copper and lead industries of the region and the Cumberland Pencil Museum that offers plenty for little hands to do. More fun for all the family can be found at Honister Slate Mine where you’ll be taken deep underground to learn all about slate mining. With its famous Jazz festival, beer festival and Words by the Water Festival there’s plenty to enjoy throughout the year.
