Probably one of the most famous villages in the Lake District National Park, Grasmere attracts visitors all year round with its delightful stone houses, cafés, gift shops and long association with poet William Wordsworth.
Found next to the beautiful Grasmere Lake, enjoy time away from the hustle and bustle of life in Grasmere village. Providing walkers and cyclists with a great base the location offers a good choice of terrain, ranging from gentle strolls to the more challenging peaks. The most famous cottage in Grasmere is of course Dove Cottage, home to William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy from 1799 to 1808. Be it romantic history, quaint cottages, full on hill hiking or more tranquil strolling, Grasmere is a great location for your Lake District cottage holiday.
As well as guided tours of Dove Cottage which gives the history of Wordsworth’s house and family, the Wordsworth Museum and Art Gallery can be found adjacent to the cottage and houses books, pictures and manuscripts from the Romantic Poets. Get out on serene Grasmere Lake in a hired row boat and for bags of family fun head for Trotters World of Animals near Bassenthwaite.
Grasmere is only a short drive away from other Lakeside favourites such as Ambleside and Windermere where the ever popular Lake cruises give a stunning view of the passing landscape and the Lakeside Aquarium and Steam Railway make a great day out. Walkers can take to the gentle slopes of the lakeside walks or attempt the more dramatic heights of Skiddaw, Scafell and Langdale Pikes.
