Found at the southern end of Ullswater, believe it or not the picturesque village of Glenridding (read ‘glen overgrown with bracken’) was once the centre of the lead mining industry in the region. Now home of the Ullswater Steamers, Glenridding is hugely popular with walkers all keen to explore the gorgeous lakeside, where poet William Wordsworth came across his famous host of daffodils, or attempt the dizzying heights of Helvellyn – Britain’s third highest mountain.
Hop aboard one of the Ullswater Steamers for a glorious way to see Ullswater. Enjoy the huge amount of activities on the Lake from sailing, fishing and windsurfing to canoeing. If you love walking you’ll be spoilt for choice with routes including the famous Aira Force and around Glencoyne Bay – home of Wordsworth’s famous daffodils. For the more experienced it’s a hike up Helvellyn and along Striding edge. Further a field there’s lots of family fun to be found at Trotters World of Animals near Bassenthwaite.
