Holiday Cottages in Coniston

coniston

Like many of the Lakeland villages, Coniston is a popular spot for walkers and climbers, and a beautiful base from which to explore the many delights of the Lake District.  The Village is found at the head of Coniston Lake which, at five miles long, is the third largest of the lakes; its deep waters saw Sir Donald Campbell break the world water speed record and inspired Arthur Ransome’s famous children’s book Swallows and Amazons.

Today, boating on the lake is still a favourite pastime, either for savouring the peace and tranquillity of the unspoilt surroundings or visiting the Victorian poet Ruskin’s beautiful house, Brantwood.  Looming large over both lake and village is the famous peak, Old Man of Coniston.  Amongst the highest in the region its slopes present an exciting challenge or a stunning view – which ever you prefer!

Things to do in Coniston

Within the village, find out all about the story of Coniston at the Ruskin Museum or relax in one of the many pubs and cafés.  On Coniston water, push off from the shore with the whole family aboard hiring a variety of sailing dingys, canoes and rowing boats from the lakeside.  For the less energetic why not take a trip on one of the Coniston Launches or the beautifully restored steam yacht Gondola?   Either of these can take you to Ruskin’s house Brantwood, said to be the finest country house in the Lake District.  It’s also only a short drive to Hill Top where Beatrix Potter wrote many of her famous children’s stories.  You’ll find all this and of course some wonderful walking, right on the doorstep of your great value Lake District holiday cottage.
