Often referred to as the ‘Pearl of Kent’, picturesque Whitstable is possibly most famous for its shellfish, especially oysters: a seafood snack much prized by the Romans, the 19th century food of the poor and today a luxurious delicacy. Whitstable is also reputedly the home of the oldest regular steam passenger railway service in the world. Built in 1830 and running between Canterbury and Whitstable, the initials of the company, C&WR, led to it being known affectionately as the Crab and Winkle Railway.
Today, Whitstable is a beautiful seaside favourite with its wooden clad houses, famous smugglers’ alley ways, such as Squeeze Gut Alley, colourful beach huts and harbour side fish market all adding to its unspoilt charm. With great little galleries, boutiques and fantastic restaurants (oysters and shellfish in abundance) Whitstable is a great base for your cheap Kent cottage holiday with bags of attractions and activities on your doorstep.
Take time to wander around the alley ways and quaint shops of Whitstable and enjoy the great beaches and harbour side. You’ll find an interesting local life museum and excellent tennis courts, plus Whitstable is an ideal place to learn to windsurf and sail. Make sure you try the oysters in one of the many great eateries (there’s an annual festival to celebrate the mollusk in July) and get out into the gorgeous Kent countryside walking or cycling down the Crab and Winkle Trail that follows the path of the old railway line.
Out of town, there’s a fantastic family day out to be enjoyed at the Wildwood Trust – Kent’s 40 acre woodland discovery park. The historic city of Canterbury is a short drive away with its magnificent Cathedral and take in beautiful Mount Ephraim Gardens.
