Reputed to be the most complete Regency town in England, Cheltenham became a Spa town in the early 18th century. George III arrived to taste the waters, the nobility followed and gradually Cheltenham was transformed into a fashionable resort. Today, Cheltenham with its magnificent architecture, award-wining gardens, stylish shops and Gold Cup racecourse, as well as the beautiful Cotswold countryside on its doorstep, is still a wonderful location for a relaxing cottage holiday.
There are beautiful buildings and gardens dotted all around Cheltenham; check out the Pittville pump room, Painswick Rococo Gardens and, a few miles out of town, superb Sudeley Castle. As well as racing there are concerts and exhibitions at Cheltenham’s renowned Racecourse and, for wonderful wildlife, head for the Slimbridge Wetlands Centre which has the largest collection of swans, ducks and geese in the world. On a hot day, take the family for a dip in open air Sandford Park Lido.
