Shanklin

Located in the sunny South East of the Isle of Wight, Shanklin is a firm favourite with families who love the safe sandy beaches, clear waters and an esplanade full of traditional seaside amusements.  Shanklin is also famous for its good weather, pretty thatched village and the Shanklin Chine, a beautiful deep wooded gorge with waterfalls and abundant wildlife.

Mentioned in the Domesday Book as ‘Sencling’, meaning a hill with a spring, it was Shanklin’s spring water and the famous Chine that made it a fashionable spot for the Victorians and, just as popular today, Shanklin is a great location for a cottage holiday close to the beautiful beach, the peaceful parks and as perfect base from which to explore the rest of the island.

Things to do in Shanklin

Visit the pretty Old Village of Shanklin with its quaint shops and tea rooms then enjoy the waterfall, wildlife and Heritage Centre in the Shanklin Chine, or how about a night time stroll when the woods and waterfall are magically lit up?  Shanklin’s picturesque public parks Tower Gardens and Rylstone Gardens run alongside the Chine.

Walkers can enjoy the spectacular coastal paths to Sandown and Bonchurch or explore the footpaths to and around America Wood on the outskirts of the town. Golfers will find many great courses on the island including the county championship course just outside Shanklin.

Elsewhere on the island, journey back in time on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, visit Queen Victoria’s favourite retreat, Osbourne House and ride the cable cars at The Needles coastal leisure park.
