The county town of the Isle of Wight and a once thriving port, today Newport is still a vibrant and busy town. The Romans established a settlement here, which was probably known as Medina, and the remains of a Roman Villa can be seen not far from the centre of Newport.
The River Medina runs through Newport and there are beautiful walks along its banks to Cowes. You’ll find good shopping and a great arts centre, plus Newport makes a great base from which to explore the rest of this beautiful island, its many beaches and attractions – all within easy reach of your welcoming holiday cottage.
The Roman villa in Newport can be visited free and is not far from the centre, there are other Roman remains in Brading to the east of the island. In the pretty nearby village of Carisbrooke explore the magnificent Norman Castle and Castle Museum where Charles I was held prisoner before his execution and, for those in search of some live entertainment, head for The Quay Arts Centre where there are regular events and interesting galleries.
With more footpaths per square mile than any other English county the Isle of Wight boasts some great walks all around Newport and the stunning coastal path. For family fun visit Amazon World, the island’s largest exotic animal attraction, go tree climbing in the woods or simply enjoy relaxing on one the Isle of Wight’s many glorious beaches.
