Lying at the eastern end of the Isle of Purbeck, Swanage is a traditional family-friendly seaside of great Victorian charm, beautiful beaches and spectacular floral displays in its parks and gardens. With a history of mining and transporting its well known Purbeck Stone all over the country, Swanage was also the favourite holiday destination of children’s author Enid Blyton.
Today, Swanage is more famous for its gently sloping, golden, sandy beach, winner of the prestigious European Blue Flag Award on many occasions. A gentle amble along the Victorian pier or a bracing walk along the Jurassic coastline; a lazy day on the beach or an active day on the water, the possibilities are endless and all close to your welcoming holiday cottage in Swanage.
Swanage Pier is a great place to start exploring this great seaside resort and offers boat trips and water sports including diving. Not far away, the thousand year old Corfe Castle and historic Anvil Point Lighthouse are both worth a visit and, come the end of July, you’ll find the annual vibrant Swanage Regatta and Carnival in full swing.
With 95 miles of stunning Jurassic coastline, this is great rambling country and there are many walks among the Purbeck Hills as well as off road routes for cyclists. There’s a peaceful nature reserve in nearby Arne and great views of the Dorset countryside from the Swanage Steam Railway. Kids of all ages will enjoy a day out at the Putlake Adventure Farm and, if you’re into extreme sports, why not try some Zorbing for a really wild day out!
