At the southern edge of the Cotswolds and set in the rolling Somerset countryside, Bath is one of the UK’s most beautiful and romantic cities. Beloved of the Romans for its hot springs, Bath has drawn the genteel classes for centuries to enjoy the thermal spring water, heritage, café society, regal architecture, great shopping and gorgeous surrounding countryside. Today, offering all this and more, Bath remains as popular as ever and a great spot for your cheap cottage holiday.
Immortalised in the novels of Jane Austin and designated a World Heritage Site, heritage lovers are spoilt for choice exploring and enjoying Bath’s fabulous Georgian streets (including the Royal Crescent and Circus), winding alleys, Roman Baths, museums and galleries. There are also bags of great eateries, from snug pubs and al fresco café snacking to fine dining. Enjoy a night at the Theatre Royal, messing about in boats on the River Avon or Kennet and Avon Canal, plus lots of family entertainment to keep even the most demanding of little minds happy.
Further afield you’ll find plenty of great walking, cycling, fishing and golf in the surrounding countryside, as Bath is within easy reach of the Cotswolds, Mendip Hills and Salisbury Plain, home to ancient Stone Henge.
Austen fans make a beeline for the Jane Austen Centre, take tea in the Regency Tea Rooms and pay a call at No. One Royal Crescent, a fabulously recreated Georgian town house courtesy of Bath Preservation Trust. Walk in the footsteps of the Roman’s in Britain at the UK’s only thermal spring, housed within an amazing complex of ancient bath houses and temples. Take your time and enjoy lots of independent boutiques and cafés before heading for the Fashion Museum and Bath’s great Abbey in the heart of the city.
If you enjoy the water, take a punt on the River Avon that flows through the city or paddle your own canoe on the Avon and Kennet Canal; both waterways offer great bank side walks full of flora and fauna. Bath has its own racecourse for a little flutter on the ‘favourite’ and, for a superb family day out, nearby Longleat featured on the BBC’s Animal Park is a must. Get out into the countryside on the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, a 13 mile off road route for all ages, plus hop aboard a steam train on the Avon Valley Railway to chug through glorious scenery.
