The story goes that in the Middle Ages Bude was no more than a Chapel on a rock… Today the ‘Chapel Rock’ still survives and can be found as part of a breakwater on one of the many beautiful beaches which, along with their fantastic breakers, make this town a charming cottage holiday location and surfers’ paradise. Backed by its 300 million-year-old cliffs, Bude offers some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Britain, plus a picturesque town centre with many unique, locally owned shops to browse and cafés from which to watch the world go by.
A great base to explore Cornwall and North Devon, as well a centre for watersports and family friendly beaches, the Bude Canal provides fishing, walking and boating. There’s also plenty more in the surrounding countryside including delightful villages, fantastic heritage and wildlife – lots for everyone to enjoy in this unspoilt corner of Cornwall.
Bring your own or hire; wiggle into those board shorts and head for the breakers… Several companies offer tuition for beginners, including Atlantic Pursuits – specialists in outdoor activities like kayaking, canoeing and surfing. The Bude Castle and Heritage centre gives an insight into the life of the town and the Play Zone at Harlequinns is very handy for the kids if the weather isn’t all it could be.
Enjoy a great day out for the family at Big Sheep with indoor and outdoor activities, including brewery and garden centre, plus the delightful Otter and Wildlife Park near Launceston. Visit the cobbled high street and 16th century cottages of beautiful Clovelly and explore the legend of King Arthur at awe inspiring Tintagel Castle. Lundy Island is well worth a visit, tee off from a good choice of golf courses in the area and visit Dartington Crystal – you’re spoilt for choice in Bude!
