This beautiful group of islands, closer to the north eastern coast of France than the south coast of England, are the perfect get-away-from-it-all destination and an ideal cottage holiday spot for families, friends and romantic breaks. Technically not part of the UK, but ‘British Crown dependencies’ (pounds and pence are good here, you don’t need your passport but take some ID!) the Channel Islands boast a continental climate, fantastic sandy beaches, abundant wildlife and individual charm.
Visit Jersey, the largest island, with its fantastic cuisine and rich heritage; the beautiful beaches and cliff paths of Guernsey and its capital St Peter Port – full of great shops and fascinating architecture. You may prefer windsurfing off Alderney’s unspoilt white sandy bays or the peaceful, tiny islands of Sark and Herm where the absence of cars gives a unique charm and complete break from the bustle and stress of everyday life.
Jersey has some great castles and museums with Mont Orgueil Castle in St Martin being the most impressive and one of the best preserved in Britain. The Channel Islands were the only part of Britain to be occupied in World War II and a visit to the Jersey War Tunnels is a fascinating day out with galleries, exhibitions and visitor centre. Also, don’t miss the world famous Jersey Zoo founded by popular author and naturalist Gerald Durrell.
There are great museums on Guernsey too plus, a wonderful Aquarium in St Peter Port as well as excellent shops and a great walk to the uninhabited bird sanctuary of Lihou Island. A visit to the smaller islands is an exciting journey in itself with a boat trip from Guernsey to Sark taking 45 minutes and seemingly transporting you back in time to this tiny island paradise – wonderful!
