The wonderful Vendée, one of the largest French counties or départments, takes its name from one of the many glittering rivers that meander through its scenic countryside. With a host of golden sandy beaches along its 160km coastline to choose from and as many sunny hours as further south, there’s plenty of beach fun to be had from building sandcastles to indulging in your favourite watersports.
A Vendée country cottage also puts you within easy reach of great heritage and culture from churches to abbeys, châteaux and museums all recording its rich and colourful past. Vendée is also famous for its diverse landscapes, from the canals, flora and fauna of the Poitevin Marshes to the many fascinating islands dotted along its picturesque coastline. Enjoy walking the many waymarked trails, bird watching, horse riding and cycling in this fabulous region.
Crystal clear seas and gently sloping sandy beaches make the Vendée a family favourite and great seaside hotspot. Popular resorts with excellent beaches and watersports include Les Sables d’Ollone, La Tranche-sur-Mer and St. Jean de Monts. One of the best ways to see the beautiful countryside is taking a balloon ride; flights take off from a variety of venues including Puy du Fou, Cerizay or Fontenay le Comte. For heritage lovers, Bluebeards Castle in Tiffauges is a fantastic medieval ruin that has an amazing collection of war machines and hosts medieval re-enactments that will enthral the kids.
Get all the family on two wheels by renting bikes and enjoying the Vendée’s many cycle routes off the beaten track and along the coast. Golfers can enjoy five 18-hole courses in the Vendée (buy a formule-golf pass for discounted entry to several courses). If it’s full on family fun you’re after, head for the historical theme park at Puy du Fou, one of France’s top theme parks, with a whirlwind of shows, rides and entertainment.
