Making up much of the interior of the gorgeous Provence region in southern France, the département of Vaucluse is famous for the heritage of cities including Avignon (the City of Popes) and Orange with its amazing Roman remains, as well as the spectacular mountain villages in the Luberon Regional Natural Park and the beautiful Lavender fields of the Drome-Provence.
Named after the famous spring in the beautiful medieval village of Fontaine de Vaucluse, the region also boasts great craggy mountains with Mont Ventoux (1,912 m), known as “the Giant of Provence”, dominating the northern landscape in an area popular with hikers. For sun baked olive groves, sunflowers, lavender fields and vines, a country cottage in Vaucluse is a passport to enjoying some of most beautiful villages, wonderful heritage, mouth watering food and spectacular countryside in the whole of Provence.
Avignon, to the west of the region on the River Rhone, is a beautifully preserved medieval town with many fine buildings and excellent museums; the famous Saint-Benezet bridge, the Palace of the Popes and the fortified walls are all now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Heritage lovers will also love Orange with its wonderful Roman amphitheatre and Arc de Triomphe, said to be some of the best preserved Roman buildings in the whole of France. If it’s out of the way beauty of mountain villages you like, head for Luberon – a land of castles, ‘perched villages’ and spectacular craggy landscapes.
The beautiful medieval village of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is also a gorgeous spot with a river gushing up out of the ground, Roman remains, museums and a beautiful walk up to the 14th century castle. Hikers have a wealth of routes to explore including trails through the gorges of the Vaucluse Plateau. Also within reach of the beaches of the Mediterranean resorts, be it riding, cycling, canoeing and even hot air ballooning there are bags of outdoor pursuits and breathtaking beauty to enjoy in the spectacular countryside of Vaucluse.
