Pas de Calais and the Côte d’Opale’s 120 km of dunes, beaches and cliffs that fall between Calais and Berck-sur-Mer in the north of France is well known for its friendly people and colourful culture. So close to our own South Coast it’s a great place to explore and enjoy a super country cottage holiday in France.
Flemish architecture and culture has come from the east to meet with Pas de Calais’s rich farm lands and impressive industrial cities. The lines of the landscape still echo many World War II battle grounds and more ancient royal meeting grounds. Spot the famous bell towers that dot the towns and villages, attached to important town buildings these tolled the time of day, curfews and warned of danger before public clocks appeared.
Due to Pas de Calais’s Flemish neighbours beer is enjoyed here every bit as much as wine and there are some great breweries in Lille and Saint-Omer to visit, plus keep your eyes peeled for local independent breweries’ ‘real ale’ offerings around the region. The rich farm land produces great bread and cheeses to enjoy plus, farmers’ markets, fêtes and festivals taking place throughout the year.
With its soft rolling landscape Pas de Calais is great for walking, horse riding and cycling and new safe cycle routes through the ferry ports and out into the countryside have been created. Check out the Nature Parks at Adomarois – near Saint-Omer, Boulonnais – near Boulogne, Parc Val Joly – near Avesnes and Saint-Amand, all with off road sign-posted bike trails. The parks are also fantastic locations for walking, watersports, wildlife and of course nature! The superb golden sandy beaches of this region mean bags of lazy picnics and watersports from sailing and sand yachting to jet skiing and paragliding. Freshwater lakes and gentle rivers offer canoeing, rafting and fishing and if you enjoy golf the lush valleys and picturesque dunes also mean some great greens and fairways so take the clubs!
The important northern city of Lille hosts a vast annual flea market that virtually takes over the city and sells everything and anything to its thousands of visitors. Visit historical Arras and Béthune ‘town of art and history’, Boulogne-sur-Mer and walk the old town walls of pretty Montreuil-sur-Mer with its lovely abbey. From World War II sites to ancient history there is plenty to see in this great region, plus the kids will love the choice of theme parks in many of the seaside resorts including Nausicaa, the National Sea Centre in Boulogne-sur-Mer and Opalaventure in Calais.
