Watched over by Mount Canigou and the low range of the Albères to the south of Perpignan, this is a land of vineyards, gorges, gorgeous beaches, heritage and art. Picasso lived and worked in the town of Céret and the sandy coastline leading down to Spain, known as the Cote Vermeille, offers lots of super beaches popular with families and watersports enthusiasts. Inland you’ll find spectacular landscapes in the Gorges de la Fou with plenty of great hiking and biking; the highest fortified town in France, designed by Vauban in the 17th century, the Citadelle de Mont-Louis and 16th century Forteresse de Salses built by the King of Aragon to keep France out of Roussillon!


Things to do in Pyrénées Orientales

If you enjoy watersports, sandcastles and beach fun head for Argeles-sur-Mer with its 7 km of long sandy beach and rock pools. There are lots of watersports on offer from windsurfing to sailing and scuba diving, plus the old town is well worth a visit for little streets and ancient bell tower. In the university town of Perpignan visit the Palace of the Kings of Majorca and wander the alleys of the Arab Quarter around the cathedral; great days out include the Citadelle de Mont-Louis and Forteresse de Salses for fabulous pageantry and heritage.

Everyone will enjoy the Gorges de la Fou, an amazing trek down in to the shady sharp ravines of the region, visit Céret for its art museum and local artists’ work including the Métiers d’Art Sant Roch. Many famous artists visited the town, take tea at the Grand Café where they used to meet. Golfers tee off at Domaine de Falgos (great views but flat it ain’t), walkers enjoy miles of trails and the kids will love Train Jaune through stunning scenery and mountain villages and Monto Z’Arbres Tree Top Activity Park.
