On Location – Cornwall

We’ve decided to do a Cornwall special for this post, based on the fact that we couldn’t agree on the best film and TV programmes and locations to visit. There are just too many lovely places in Cornwall! And as the cold spells are due to disappear any day now (we hope!) we decided that there is no better time to book a holiday cottage in Cornwall and begin your exploration of filming locations in the area.

Obviously no article on Cornwall as a filming location would be complete without mentioning the Jamaica Inn on the edge of Bodmin Moor.  From the famous ghost story of the same name by Daphne DuMaurier, and adapted into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1939, the Jamaica Inn still proves very popular with visitors to the area. It was also featured in an episode of Most Haunted, where the team once again failed to prove the existence of ghosts. Still, it might be advisable to book your holiday cottage a safe distance away just to make sure!

Cornwall has also stood in for other countries. In Pierce Brosnan’s last outing as James Bond: 2002’s Die Another Day, the charming coastal village of Holywell Bay stood in for North Korea. We haven’t been to North Korea but the lack of charming self-catering accommodation in the film’s opening sequence certainly proved that the set designers earned their money! The film also featured the interior of the Eden Project, which makes an excellent location to visit whatever the weather.

Two UK films that were clear about their locations were 2000’s Saving Grace and 2004’s Ladies in Lavendar. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to suppose that the attractive locations played a large part in attracting Brenda Blethyn, Judi Dench and Maggie Smith to the films. Saving Grace was filmed in the stunning fishing village of Port Isaac and makes great use of this beautiful location, whereas Ladies in Lavendar was filmed in Penzance and the small village of Helston. All areas that are well-worth a visit for those looking for something uniquely English on their holidays.

Hopefully we’ve listed a filming location that peaks your interest. Even if we haven’t then Cornwall is worth visiting for the stunning scenery alone. If you’d like to book a bargain holiday cottage in the area then why not visit easycottages.com and search for availability.

Walk the Cotswolds.

Sometimes referred to as ‘The Heart of England”, which seems quite appropriate for Valentine’s, the Cotswolds make-up the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK. With over 100 miles of track running from Bath to Chipping Campden, the Cotswold Way takes in some stunning locales and walkers can look forward to seeing the Malvern Hills, the Severn Estuary, the Welsh border hills and much, much more.

Escape to the Dales.

As its rugged hills and river valleys inspired the works of the Bronte sisters, the Yorkshire Dales’ rich romantic heritage that makes it a perfect destination for a romantic break. There’s plenty of choice in terms of activities with incredible caving, walking and cycling opportunities, but then again, you may just choose to stay inside and snuggle up in your holiday cottage. And who could blame you?

Head North!

Scotland has a lot to offer those looking for romantic getaways, with rolling green highlands and beautiful lochs just a short journey from heritage filled cities. If you’d like to give flowers to the one you love then why not do one better and visit the Scottish Snowdrop Festival, running until the 15th March in locations all over the country. TripAdvisor’s 10 dirtiest hotels

alcatraz

Friend of travellers everywhere, TripAdvisor has recently published a list of the 10 dirtiest hotels in the UK. Of the ten, eight are in the nation’s capital – that’s right you have a higher chance of sharing your room with some unexpected guests if you book a hotel in London! TripAdvisor users describe one hotel as “a cradle of filth” and the “WORST HOTEL I HAVE EVER STAYED I MEAN EVEEEER!!! While one user sums it up with a simple: “UUUGGGHHH!!!” Sounds lovely!

Number one on the list for the dirtiest hotel in the UK even managed to achieve the bizarre customer comment of “Alcatraz”. Incidentally the same hotel also wins the award for the dirtiest hotel in Europe, though we can’t imagine that’s an award they’ll be celebrating!

The full list can be read on the TripAdvisor website, which also lists the dirtiest hotels in around the world.

Of course, if the thought of a hotel stay is not your cup of tea, then there is probably a place where you can find inspected, privately owned holiday cottages in the UK or France. Hint: easycottages.com!
